Fort McAllister Historic State Park Vacation- May 2016

Hello! I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing weekend. To all the weekend and holiday warriors who worked, thank you! I also want to give thanks and appreciation to everyone who has made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom; and the family and friends who have had to endure the pain and sacrifice of being on this earth without their loved ones. We love and appreciate you more than words can say.

For Memorial Day weekend we went to Fort McAllister State Park with my parents for a family vacation! Fort McAllister is in Richmond Hills, Georgia, just outside of Savannah. My parents generously rented a cottage for everyone to stay in. We arrived around 2:30 but couldn’t check in until 4, so we kicked off the weekend with lunch on the deck of Fish Tales. It is a seafood restaurant on the marina with a laid-back beach vibe. It’s only about a mile outside the gate of the park so that was very convenient. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was the perfect way to start a vacation!

After a leisurely lunch on the water we went and checked in to our cottage. We could not believe how nice they were! They were very roomy, the kitchen was well equipped, and it was the perfect set up for a family or group. Our cottage had two bedrooms on opposite ends of the common area. Each had two full size beds, TV with dish, and a full bathroom (doubles sinks, one had a shower, the other a tub.) The living room had comfortable seating, a tv, and wood burning fireplace. The cottage also had a nice size screened in porch overlooking the marsh. The cottage was raised so there was a lot of room to hang out under the cottage (perfect for setting up hammocks we found out), a fire pit, grill, and picnic table.

Cottage Time

We did have some overcast skies and rain from the Tropical Depression but overall the weather was nice. Saturday we spent most our day at the cottage. We sipped coffee on the front porch, lounged in hammocks, and spent Saturday night by the campfire. It was really nice to be able to just slow down and have time to relax and talk with the family.

Outdoor Fun

Sunday we were a little more adventurous and headed to the docks. The guys and my sister did some fishing while we were there. Again, the depression was moving through so there was some serious winds! We made the best of it though and it was a fun time. By afternoon it had started to clear up a bit so we headed out on one of the nature trails for a 3 mile hike. The trail went along the marsh and river and was beautiful! We typically hike mountain terrain so it was really fun and interesting to change things up a bit with a coastal marsh hike. They also have two boat ramps and kayak, canoe, and bike rentals. Originally we had planned to all rent kayaks one day, but decided against it with the ever changing weather. It is definitely on the agenda for next time though!

Food, Food, Food

We ate so much good food on this trip thanks to my amazing parents! The cottage has a full kitchen perfect for cooking for a group. It was also well equipped and I liked that my mom and I could be in the kitchen and still have plenty of room for other people to move in and out. There was a long counter in the back of the kitchen perfect for a buffet setup! They also provide a nice table which was perfect for our dinners. We grilled out every night and even roasted corn over the camp fire one night!

I would highly suggest Fort McAllister as a weekend getaway, especially if you are a family or group! The cottages are close together so you easily could rent more than one if needed and be easily accessible to each other. There is lots of fun nature activities to enjoy at the park, but the cottage also provides a very comfortable place to just relax and enjoy good company and conversation! My only suggestion is to make sure you bring outdoor chairs for the fire ring outside so you can more comfortably sit near it. That’s a wrap for my weekend recap!

Did you do anything fun over your weekend?
